Care order applications reach record level
The Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service’s (Cafcass) latest statistics for care orders (applications to take children into care) for July 2011 are at a very high level. During the month there were 856 care applications. The May, June and July application numbers were the highest ever recorded by Cafcass for these individual months.
The sharp increase in July 2011 compared with the same month in 2010 follows March which saw 892 applications, the highest ever number of care applications in a single month.
In the second quarter of 2011, Cafcass received 3,213 new applications a 7.1% surge compared to the same period last year, the highest ever recorded by Cafcass for these individual months.
In 2010-11, Cafcass saw a 4% increase in care applications to 9,180 up from 8,826 on 2010-2009, when there was a 36% increase on applications received in 2008-09.
