It has long been the case and always been a shocking statistic that an average of two women each week die as a result of domestic abuse.
Recently, it has been reported in the media that this statistic has become even more shocking since the lockdown restrictions commenced over the last three weeks.
It has been reported that there have been at least 16 suspected domestic abuse killings which equates to around five women a week, more than double.
Family Care Solicitor Rebecca Wolfenden says, “The pressures of lockdown are getting to us all but the pressures of lockdown and living in fear of an abusive partner, with nowhere to go and feeling unable to reach out for help and support, must be horrendous. As must suffering harassment or abuse from a partner or ex-partner, that you do not live with, at any time but with all the additional stress and pressures of lockdown must be all the more unbearable and scary.”
Domestic Abuse affects not only women, but men and children. You should not suffer in silence and you are not alone. Don’t be another statistic. There is help and support out there still.
The National Domestic Abuse Helpline remains open on 0808 2000 247, as do refuges and information can be found on the Women’s Aid website along with others. In the case of an emergency you should always dial 999.
