Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES) – What Are the Symptoms?

  • Posted on

Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES) is a rare condition which is caused by extreme pressure and swelling of the nerves at the base of the spine. The nerves become compressed and the condition can have a devastating effect on sufferers and their families. Someone with CES may need continuing support, care and rehabilitation.

The symptoms of CES include:-
• Bowel and bladder problems
• Severe lower back pain
• Sensory loss in leg or legs
• Sexual dysfunction
• Loss of sensation around the inner thighs and buttocks
These are “red flag” symptoms mandating urgent MRI Scanning and surgical treatment. Unfortunately, these symptoms can be missed or dismissed leading to long term disability.
