Cancer in the Workplace

  • Posted on

As part of a partnership with Maggies Oldham solicitors from Pearson will be presenting a ‘Cancer in the Workplace’ workshop at the Oldham hospital centre.

Identifying employment rights for patients, as well as helping provide practical advice for employers on how to support staff and colleagues with cancer is the aim of the event.  Employment solicitors will provide guidance on how to be a good employer hoping to help businesses avoid the pitfalls of possible tribunals.

The event on November 14th is aimed at understanding the emotional, physical and psychological needs of employees with cancer and providing a framework for management and is all part of the morning seminar aimed at local employers.

Employment Policies

Employment Rights Act, Associative Discrimination and Constructive Unfair Dismissal will be some of the legal matters being discussed as specialist employment solicitors advise on flexible working and time off, as well as the roles of carers when cancer hits a family member.

Commenting on the event, Laura Tomlinson from Maggies said: We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Pearson Solicitors and Financial Advisors to launch our Cancer in the Workplace workshops.  The workshop is designed to help managers and HR professionals support their colleagues who are affected by cancer.

“A positive return to work can have a significant role in recovery from cancer and together we aim to share our expertise with local employers letting them know how best to support their employees with knowledge, empathy and understanding.

“We’re thrilled that this first workshop is a sell out and are looking forward to sharing it with many more local employers in 2020.”

Solicitor Susan Mayall, from Pearson Solicitors, added:  “Sometimes it’s not just about the law, employers have to just do the right thing but by working closely with the staff at Maggies we can hopefully help to guide local businesses on what they need to do to support their workforce and at the same time build a framework for good employment policies and procedures.”

The event has been such a success it is a sell out, but others are planned for next year and information can be found in 2020 via Maggies and Pearson Solicitors and Financial Advisers.

By 2030 there will almost 1 million people with cancer in the UK workforce and the aim is for Maggies Oldham to assist up to 10,000 local people in the area annually.
