INSIGHT: Firms Urged to Get Involved with the Oldham Business Awards

  • Posted on

It’s that time of year again, a time for Oldham businesses to take stock, look at what they do well, how they have performed in the past year and then enter the 2017 Oldham Business Awards.

At a launch event recently we heard from previous winners, sponsors and organisers and celebrated the growing success of the award ceremony now in its 9th year.  The organisers are also on the look out for more sponsors to get involved in 2017 and have a wealth of smaller packages available to businesses of all sizes.

Pearson Solicitors and Financial Advisers are proud to be involved with the event and sponsor the Business Up to £1million category.

Former Businessman of the Year, Frank Rothwell, told the audience that he was a proud Oldhamer, enjoyed his association with the OBA and encouraged companies to get involved in sponsorship to help the annual awards be bigger and better than ever.

One company that enjoyed success last year was Tunnel Engineering Services (UK) based in Oldham.  The company has established an enviable reputation for the design and manufacture of tunnelling equipment for the construction industry.

After entering the awards for the first time Tunnel won both a Business of the Year award and scored a personal triumph for Managing Director Geoff Clarke who was named Business Person of the Year.

As Geoff told potential entrants the awards has led to the company securing extra funding and enabling them to move to much bigger premises just across the road, so he would encourage anyone to get involved.

He said the company operate almost in secrecy, getting on with their job and transporting the giant tunnelling equipment pieces down the Oldham Way in the dead of night whilst the rest of us are asleep.

Speaking on receipt of the awards earlier this year Geoff said “It’s an incredible honour to receive both of these awards, we believe manufacturing is very important to the economy and to receive recognition is fantastic.  Having recently built the largest diameter tunnel boring machine ever constructed in the UK, our work gives us an enormous sense of achievement but I must not take all the credit as running a company is a huge responsibility, which requires team effort and this is done with people who are great to work with.”

The aim of the awards is to celebrate business success whilst also recognising the contribution that businesses make in helping to shape the fabric of our society.

The Awards reward businesses excellence amongst companies located within the Oldham Metropolitan Borough, whether it be for wealth creation, innovation, inspirational leadership, community support, entrepreneurism or good practice in people management.
