Young laywers aim to help employees access legal services

  • Posted on

Issues at work can take their toll, if you do not know where to turn they can be daunting and in today’s workplace, access to justice is often considered a luxury and potentially an expense, but now two young lawyers are hoping to help out.

For many employees facing unfair dismissal, discrimination, or workplace harassment, navigating the legal system without representation can be overwhelming.

Pearson Solicitors partner with The Growth Company

Two ambitious young lawyers at Pearson Solicitors and Financial Advisers, solicitor, Georgina Hassall and trainee solicitor Mia Bradley, are hoping to give something back by offering their services once a week on a pro bono basis for employees who don’t know where to turn.

“This is independent legal advice service for people who really don’t know what to do, for many it could be the first time they have needed the services of a solicitor, for others it’s a chance to chat with someone about their potential for a claim,” said Georgina.

“As a trainee solicitor, taking part in pro bono employment law work has been invaluable. It’s a reminder that even at the earliest stage of our careers, we can make a real difference by helping people navigate issues that directly affect their livelihoods and sense of fairness at work,” added Mia.

Employment legal advice scheme

The North West firm are partnering with Manchester based social enterprise group The Growth Company who refer clients to the Pearson team as part of the Employment Legal Advice scheme.  This is a free service set up by The Growth Company together with Citizens Advice Manchester, Citizens Advice Bury & Bolton and a network of legal partners, to provide support to Greater Manchester workers currently dealing with employment issues.

“We were approached by The Growth Company to work with them and all clients come through them, not directly to us,” said Partner and Head of Employment Law at Pearson, Alan Lewis, who is mentoring the pair through the scheme.

“Employment issues strike at the heart of people’s daily lives and by offering this service our young lawyers are helping individuals who might otherwise go unheard and learning that social responsibility and professional development go hand in hand, whilst at the same time deepening their understanding of the complex issues shaping today’s workplaces.”
