Drafting prenuptial agreements before the Wedding Day

  • Posted on

Consideration of financial or prenuptial agreements before setting out on a life together can be essential if you are marrying into wealth.

As we see in the news recently the founder of Amazon Jeff Bezos announces his pending divorce to wife MacKenzie of 25 years potentially making her the wealthiest woman in the world.

Whilst she is known to have worked closely with her husband in the early days of the business when it was based in a garage, it is unknown whether they will have made either a prenuptial or even post nuptial agreements to cover for their position today.

On the face of it they have obviously have significant assets and MacKenzie is likely to receive significant funds from their lives together.

Our family lawyer Lucinda McWatt says, “It is vital to receive thorough legal advice in relation to these sorts of agreements. Your solicitor should be able to advise you in respect of the formalities which would ensure the agreement is binding. It is also vital to have it reviewed regularly. Don't regret not seeking that advice from the start and be proactive.”
